Scéalta
Irish Folklore as an Interactive Motion Comic
Completed as my dissertation in Interactive Digital Media, Scéalta is a concept website exploring interactive motion comics as an alternative medium for preserving and retelling Irish folklore. The project combines limited animation, narration, interactivity, and sound to bring the story of Labhraidh Loingseach to life, honouring the oral tradition of folklore storytelling in a digital format.

Preserving an oral tradition through an interactive medium
Irish folklore has historically been passed down through spoken word. Scéalta uses the motion comic format as a bridge between that tradition and the possibilities of the web.
What is a motion comic?
A motion comic is a digital comic that uses limited animation to add movement to individual panels. As a digital-native medium, it also opens the door to elements like sound, narration, and interactivity that a static comic cannot support.
How it was built
Scéalta was built across a combination of tools.
- Procreate — used to illustrate and draw all artwork for the comic panels and characters
- Unity with Panopoly — used to animate the panels and assemble the motion comic experience
- HTML, CSS & JavaScript — used to build the surrounding website, housing the experience and delivering it in the browser
